The Former Iron Woman that Paddled Around Australia in 254 Days

Bonnie Hancock is an extraordinary lady.

She covered over 12,700 kilometres on a surf ski around Australia.

Over 254 days at sea.

In the modern world where resilience in children is under question, Bonnie is a wonderful example of the highest standards of mental strength and resilience.

She started nippers at Sawtel from the age of five, and dreamt from the age of 12 to become Karla Gilbert (she won the Kelloggs Ironwoman Series seven years in a row from 1995 to 2003) and at the age of 17, she became a professional Iron Woman competitor, as did her sister, Courtenay. She waitressed through uni and trained every day, 6.5 km in the pool every morning under the eye of legendary coach, Denis Cotterell. After uni each day she would do 10-20 km on the surf ski, and some running on the soft sand to complete her day that tended to be complete by 7:00 p.m., with competitions at the weekends. That gruelling schedule shaped her life daily until the age of 25.

She then evolved from Iron Woman competitions into a ski paddler on an 18 kg craft, typically racing over five-minute races, whilst embarking on a career as a dietician.

Her ultra endurance journey began at Broadbeach Library, reading a book about a lady who had written a biography about it. She had 25 rejections for sponsorship before she signed her first sponsor.

Her incredible journey paddling around Australia for over 254 days began when she paddled 73 km on her first day. Then, after about a week in, the daily target was scheduled to be 90 km on that day; but half way through a few hours, she was told it had to be increased to 120 km that day as it was decided she had to go around an island. After a month of constant paddling she had bulging discs and various other illnesses, but nothing would stop her, including the crocodiles encountered.

The mental hurdles she smashed through were endless. “Being prepared to adapt your plan” was front and centre in her amazing journey. Everytime a headwind came, she became stronger, and she would realise that when the headwinds dropped.

Lemons into Lemonade!

In the interview, Bonnie talks about a lot of the challenges along the way, including some good and bad decisions she made, how she developed her work ethic, and the joy of working to a plan.

This included a discussion around parenting and sport, managing finances, how she got into ultra endurance and many other fascinating anecdotes.

It’s an amazing story.

SSI Expands Queensland Services Through Zillmere Community Office

Settlement Services International (SSI) has officially opened a new office in Zillmere to enhance local collaboration and support services for migrant and refugee communities.

Community Hub Opens in Zillmere

Settlement Services International (SSI) has marked the opening of a new community and office space in Brisbane North, situated at the Zillmere Community Centre. The office is intended to serve newly arrived migrants and refugees, delivering services under the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) program.

The space was officially launched on 24 April in the presence of government representatives Ms Anika Wells and Ms Leanne Linard, as well as local councillors.

Partnership with Zillmere Community Centre

The new SSI office is co-located at the Zillmere Community Centre, which is auspiced by the North East Community Support Group Inc. (NECSG). NECSG has operated since 1982 and sponsors various community-focused programs targeting poverty, homelessness, disability, isolation, and unemployment.

The Zillmere Community Centre is home to key NECSG services, including the Zillmere Young Peoples Support Services and the Zillmere Family Accommodation Program. It provides a local platform for accessible, grassroots support and program delivery.

A Strategic Response to Growing Demand

SSI’s Queensland State Director, Robert Hoitink, said the Zillmere office responds to increasing demand for place-based and culturally responsive support in one of Brisbane’s most diverse and fast-growing suburbs.

The SETS program provides early settlement assistance to newcomers, helping them build essential life skills, gain economic independence, and establish social networks. The hub also offers SSI a base for strengthening local partnerships and coordinating wrap-around support services in collaboration with councils, cultural leaders, NGOs, and other government agencies.

Service Integration Without Duplication

SSI emphasised that the Zillmere office is designed to complement—not replicate—existing community services. The organisation intends to collaborate closely with other service providers, ensuring coordinated delivery of support across employment, social inclusion, and integration pathways.

SSI General Manager for Newcomers, Integration and Settlement, Ms Yamamah Agha, noted that existing partnerships with councils, faith groups and community services would form the foundation for the Zillmere office’s coordinated model of support.

The office represents another stage in SSI’s commitment to delivering strengths-based services across Queensland, led by the needs and insights of the local community.

Very flavourful Afghani food. Nice decor and lovely warm service. Went for dinner tonight and very glad to find such an amazing place close to home! Kebab plate had succulent meat and delicious rice. Naan by itself was so delicious. End your meal with their special tea and you wont regret.

Yesita Putri
⭐⭐⭐⭐

My first time visit the restaurant and tried Afghan food Food was absolutely amazing 5/5 The kebab and beef mantu were juicy and well spices. Ambience of the restaurant is actually great. Definitely will get the food here again, but maybe order online then pick up rather then come in person. Give poor rating for the service tho. Seems like the waitresses are very very new, not aware of the food they sell. Needs to take my order multiple time and waited almost 40 minutes for the food, yet they serve the food for people who dine in first!. There’s obviously a reason why I want a takeaway 🙄 But the kitchen lady came and fix the situation

May Vrazofski
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We have been here twice now and both times have been blown away with flavour, service and portion size. I love the mantu to start (not pictured, too hungry for photo) and this time we shared a Karwan Platter for 2 and Afghan salad. Juicy, fresh meat grilled to perfection and the fluffiest rice you’ll ever have. Can’t wait to visit again!

Milky On the way
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is my first time here, and I love it! I’ve never tried Afghan food before, and this place really impressed me. The dumplings were flavorful—the marinated meat filling had a nice hint of herbs. I ordered the chicken kebab, and the chicken was tender and juicy, with a delicious marinade. The rice was soft, light, and fluffy. The dipping sauce was great. The portions were huge—I couldn’t finish everything! I also had the marinated lamb kabab, which was equally delicious. I tried their special ice cream, which had a unique flavor I had never tasted before. I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t bad either. The serving was quite large—definitely enough for two people. Overall, I really like this place and highly recommend it! The portions are generous, the service is friendly, and the prices aren’t too expensive (around $20-$40+), but the quality is excellent. I’ll definitely come back!

Good Malaysian food. Good portion, delicious and authentic. Their Nasi lemak, hainanese chicken rice and char kuey teow are very good. The yam cake is nice too. ABC dessert was so so in my opinion.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This review is long overdue… Little Nyonya is one of our fave Malaysian restaurants in Brisbane. We drove 45 min each way to eat their food when they were in Ferny Grove, and fortunately for us they are in a much more accessible location now! The food is always top notch, reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking back in the day. The weekly specials are the stars of the show, but they do sometimes run out. If you want a particular meal, call them and they’ll reserve one for you. Service has always been amazing and efficient, and the kuih that they sell at the counter is the cherry on top. Love taking some home for the next day. Highly recommended!

Ebi Tempura
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sincere and authentic Malaysian food. One dish that stood out on the special menu is Singapore Fried Hokkien (prawn)which was delicious!!! This dish is not commonly found on the menu of Asian restaurants in Brisbane. I applaud the owner’s passion for cooking for keeping the authenticity of the flavours. I noticed she add interesting local dishes to the special menu from time to time. Look forward other dishes in the future. The nyonya kuihs on the counter look very enticing. Drinks are ordered from the bar next to the kitchen. Having some Malaysian drink options on menu eg ice teh tarik would complement the dishes even more. Friendly service!

Joe Khoo
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Our group of five visited for lunch. The service was fast and the Cha Kuey Teow, Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang, Combination Laksa and Fried Bee Hoon were all delicious. Highly recommended!💯

Great local Friday night takeaway feast with friends. Awesome value and favourite were Mongolian lamb, honey chicken and dim sum. We’ve been back 3-4 times since and always delicious!

I decided to give this place a try for Chinese New Year dinner with the family. We were blown away by the dish quality and freshness of ingredients. Spot on Hong kong cantonese cuisine by an experienced chef. I recommend ordering authentic dishes. The scallops were fat and juicy in generous portions. The seafood hot pot was exactly as I remember eating it growing up in Singapore. My son loved the sweet and sour pork. The bater to protein ratio was just nice..not too thick. The sweet sour sauce didn’t have artificial colours like other places. The cost of white rice is per person and free flow which is great for big eaters like myself that need rice to eat Chinese dishes. A great Northside treasure

We loved the sweet & sour pork, chicken chow mein & combination fried rice. So delicious, full of flavour, authentic. If your from NZ this place has that taste of home. Highly recommend.

In Brisbane it’s hard to find quality Chinese food, have tried many, then we stumbled across this golden nugget, this place is amazing every time my family orders here, one of the only places that sells my fav dish (Mongolian lamb) not the cheaper beef variant but the proper version and it is the best✅, sweet and sour pork ✅ lemon chicken ✅ special fried rice ✅ haven’t had a single bad experience here, we order it and can rely on the quality. Sun sun you have some loyal customers here and we are happy to support your buisness . Thank you

We got takeaway from Sun Sun, our first experience of having a meal from this restaurant, and it was delicious! The food was fresh and tasty. The service was warm and kind. Meanwhile, although we got takeaway, it was evident that the restaurant itself was very neatly presented. We would definitely contemplate eating in next time. Would highly recommend. Recommended dishes Sweet and Sour Pork, Special Fried Rice, Mongolian Lamb

My husband and I recently dined here and the experience was exceptional from start to finish. The highlight was the steak, which was cooked to absolute perfection. We ordered it medium-rare, and it came out with a beautifully seared crust, tender and juicy on the inside. It was perfectly seasoned, truly melts in your mouth! Nico was so warm, friendly and attentive, creating a welcoming atmosphere. We received a complimentary chocolate pecan brownie which was to die for! If you’re craving a top-notch steak, Outback Steakhouse in Aspley is the place to go. Highly recommend!

Nice dinner out for fathers 77th birthday. Meals were lovely, service was great. The gentleman who served us come back asked if we wanted drinks refilling. And also brought a little lamp to the table when my father was struggling to read the menu as the place is dim lit for atmosphere.

Could not fault anything, all was perfect. Between us we had steak, ribs, salad, vegetable and of course cheesy fries. Steak cooked to perfection. Rib sensational. Salad fresh crisp and I recommend the honey mustard dressing. The staff were attentive and professional. Kudos to Jhun the manager. He was everywhere checking on everything. A great manager ensuring a great experience.

500 Free Native Plants Up for Grabs in Aspley Hypermarket This Weekend

Aspley families can pick up a free native plant and get smart tips on saving power and water when the sustainability pop-up hits the Hypermarket this weekend.

Locals Are Invited to Take Home Free Native Plants This Weekend

Residents in Aspley will have a unique opportunity to green their gardens for free this weekend, with 500 native plants being given away at a pop-up stall hosted at the Aspley Hypermarket.

The Free Native Plant Pop-Up will kick off at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, 12 April 2025, and run until all plants are collected. Held in partnership with Brisbane City Council’s Free Native Plants Program, the event is organised by the Brisbane Sustainability Agency to encourage sustainable gardening in local communities.

What the Event Offers

The pop-up is part of a city-wide effort to boost biodiversity and promote low-maintenance native plants in Brisbane homes. Attendees can collect one of 500 free plants on a first-come, first-served basis, so early arrival is encouraged.

The event also features the Brisbane Carbon Challenge, where residents can assess their carbon footprint and get advice on cutting emissions and saving on energy and water bills. Organisers say the goal is to inspire small, sustainable changes for a greener Brisbane.

Why Native Plants Matter

Native plants need less water, adapt well to local conditions, and attract wildlife like birds and bees. The Free Native Plant Program helps make these plants more accessible across Brisbane suburbs.

To support new gardeners, a simple care guide is provided with tips on soil prep, planting, and maintenance. This initiative reflects Brisbane’s push for practical, community-level climate action and aims to strengthen residents’ connection to their environment.

Getting There and What to Bring

Organisers encourage attendees to walk, cycle, or use public transport to align with the event’s sustainability focus. The stall will be at Aspley Hypermarket on Albany Creek Road, accessible by several bus routes.

No registration or documents are needed to claim a plant, but with limited supply, plants will only be available until they run out.

Hosted by Brisbane City Council, the free event invites people of all ages to help plant trees across 15 selected Aspley streets. No bookings are needed, and all equipment will be provided, with planting holes already prepared.

Residents are encouraged to bring water, wear sturdy shoes, and dress for the weather.

Community Spirit and Lasting Benefits

After the planting, attendees can enjoy a sausage sizzle and cold drink, with a free native plant to take home. Council says the event promotes greener, more liveable suburbs, while also building stronger community ties.

Long-Term Impact for Aspley

Council officers say planting more trees not only improves the appearance of neighbourhoods but also helps create more walkable and pleasant streets.

The initiative supports Brisbane’s efforts to expand its urban forest and reduce heat in local areas. It’s part of a series of events designed to make the city more sustainable through hands-on community action.
