Long Lines and No Toilets: Chaos at Drake Concert in Boondall

The excitement of Drake’s Brisbane concert quickly turned into frustration as thousands of fans stood outside the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall for hours, battling long lines, no food, and limited access to toilets.

Crowds Left Waiting for Hours

On Monday, 24 February, doors to Brisbane Entertainment Centre (BEC) were originally set to open at 5:30 p.m., but reports from attendees indicated that access was significantly delayed. Some fans claimed they were still outside as late as 9:00 p.m., with many resorting to social media to vent their frustration.

Videos showed thousands of people lined up around the venue’s lake and into car parks, some calling out for Drake to let them in.

Event organisers sent out text messages earlier in the day, urging attendees to arrive early due to anticipated traffic and security checks. However, even those who arrived before 6:00 p.m. found themselves caught in an extended wait.

The delay was reportedly caused by the late arrival of Drake, his entourage, and supporting acts, though the BEC or promoters provided no official reason.

No Access to Basic Amenities

With thousands waiting outside well past the expected entry time, concerns grew over the lack of access to toilets, food, and water. Some fans were able to locate on-site bathrooms, but the lines were long and unmanageable.

Others took to social media, describing their discomfort, with one attendee stating they were “desperate for a toilet break but stuck in a never-ending queue.”

Some fans also expressed confusion over whether restroom facilities were available at all, while others noted that security offered little information about when they would be let inside. By 8:30 p.m., frustration had boiled over, with concertgoers questioning why the event had not communicated updates to those waiting.

Drake Takes the Stage Late

The opening DJ acts wrapped up their set by 8:20 p.m., leaving a long gap before Drake finally took the stage at 9:50 p.m.—a full two hours after the scheduled time. The delay was longer than those experienced at his previous Sydney concerts, sparking criticism from fans who called the wait “ridiculous” and “disrespectful.”

Adding to the disappointment, a last-minute ban on posters was enforced for the Brisbane show, preventing fans from bringing signs into the venue. In contrast, previous concerts in Sydney and Melbourne saw fans holding up posters asking Drake for money, leading him to hand out tens of thousands of dollars to lucky audience members.

Mixed Reactions from Fans

For some, the excitement of seeing the Canadian rapper outweighed the frustration of the long wait.

However, many were left disappointed by the experience, calling for better crowd management and communication from organisers.

While Drake’s past shows in Australia have made headlines for generous giveaways and viral moments, the Brisbane leg of his tour will be remembered for the delays and logistical issues that left fans outside for hours.

Drake is scheduled to return to Sydney on 7 March for the final show of his Australian tour.

Bribie Island Community Mourns

Hundreds gathered at Woorim Beach, where her father, Steve Zmuda, and sister led a procession into the ocean. A Surf Life Saving Queensland boat carrying the club flag led the tribute, and the Westpac helicopter dropped a wreath into the water.

Ms Zmuda, a dedicated surf lifesaver and talented musician, was remembered by her peers as a bright, compassionate young woman.

A Lasting Legacy

Ms Zmuda’s tragic passing has left a lasting impact on the Bribie Island community. While her family grieves, they have urged people to continue enjoying the beach she loved. Her school has also created a prayer garden with a plaque in her memory.

Ms Eilish’s tribute served as a decisive moment of connection. It brought attention to Ms Zmuda’s life and her legacy. As fans filed out of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, the emotion in Boondall was palpable—a testament to how music can unite people in times of sorrow.

Among the cases before the court is that of a 33-year-old man, who was arrested on February 17 for allegedly choking and physically assaulting a 34-year-old woman at a residence in Brisbane’s north. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Sandgate Magistrates Court on February 24 to face charges of choking in a domestic relationship and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court will also process several other DFV-related cases stemming from the operation, which aimed to support victim-survivors and prevent further offences. Police engaged with offenders held in watch houses, ensuring they understood the impact of their actions and connecting them with intervention programs.

About the Operation Whiskey Legion

Operation Whiskey Legion saw heightened police presence in high-foot-traffic areas such as shopping centres, where officers conducted community engagement to raise awareness about DFV support services. The operation also included wanding operations at public transport hubs, leading to the detection of weapons offences.

NBD Chief Superintendent David Cuskelly reaffirmed the police commitment to tackling DFV, stating, “We will not relent in our efforts to empower our community to recognise the signs of DFV, intervene safety and support victim-survivors effectively.”

One of the most noticeable changes is the removal of the old roundabout, replaced by brand-new traffic signals. These upgrades have streamlined traffic movement, reducing congestion and making pedestrian crossings safer with signalised crossings.

Key sections of Beams Road between Cowie Road and Balcara Avenue have also been widened and separated by a median island. This allows for better traffic management and accommodates the new traffic signals, ensuring a smoother driving experience.

For pedestrians and cyclists, a new shared path along Beams Road now offers a dedicated and safe route for active travel. The project has also modernised power and communication services, supporting future growth and strengthening the area’s infrastructure.

The Impact So Far

The first stage of the upgrade has already delivered significant improvements, including:

  • 9,000 tonnes of new road asphalt laid for a smoother commute
  • Over 1.2km of new shared path constructed
  • 235 new trees and ground cover planted to enhance the local environment
  • More than 5 km of underground services upgraded for power, water, and communications

What’s Next?

With Stage 1 completed, planning for the next phase of the Beams Road Upgrade is well underway. The next stage, which focuses on the section between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road, was released for tender in early 2025, with construction expected to begin in mid-2025.

Upcoming works will include:

  • Widening the roadway from Carselgrove Avenue to Handford Road
  • Constructing a new shared path for pedestrians and cyclists along this section
  • Building a new pedestrian underpass at Cabbage Tree Creek to improve accessibility and safety

Conservationists Question Bushland Levy Use Amid Bridgeman Downs Dispute

Brisbane has addressed concerns about the use of the $20 million annual bushland levy, following claims that some funds were directed toward park upgrades, specifically the Archerfield Wetlands District Park. While some have questioned whether the levy should be used for maintenance and infrastructure, local officials argued that the funds are supporting bushland rehabilitation efforts.

The debate over the levy has drawn attention to broader conservation efforts, including the proposed housing subdivision (A006225146) in Bridgeman Downs. Environmentalists argued that while the council has committed to preserving green spaces, developments like this raise questions about balancing urban growth with environmental protection.

Subdivision plan (Photo credit: Brisbane PD Online)

A local conservation group, the North Brisbane Catchments, has lodged a notice of appeal in the Planning & Environment Court, challenging the decision to subdivide a critical wildlife corridor into 14 lots.

Dawn Road Reserve (Photo credit: R V/Google Maps)

The group stated in their appeal that the approval contradicts the community-developed Bridgeman Downs Neighbourhood Plan, which was established and published well before the Development Application was submitted.

The site at 440 Beckett Road, near Dawn Road Reserve, is currently home to a variety of native wildlife, including koalas, birds, and platypus colonies. Environmental advocates argue that the land serves as an essential link in the Mountains to Mangroves corridor and should remain undeveloped.

Wildlife Queensland suggested that wildlife corridors should be at least 50 metres wide to effectively support local species, but the approved plan includes only a 20-metre-wide corridor. Some conservationists worry that the environmental covenants placed on two of the lots may not be enough to prevent future development.

BCC has stated that environmental factors were carefully considered in the planning process. A town planner’s report highlighted that measures had been taken to protect existing habitats while allowing for development in the growing suburb.

More than 40 formal objections were lodged against the subdivision, with residents and environmental groups expressing concerns over the impact on wildlife and Brisbane’s broader conservation efforts.

The ongoing discussions about the bushland levy and land development highlight the challenges of maintaining Brisbane’s biodiversity while accommodating urban expansion. As the legal challenge moves forward, the future of the Bridgeman Downs site remains uncertain, with conservationists advocating for stronger protections of the city’s green spaces.

Libby Trickett Leads Brisbane North Chamber’s International Women’s Day Event

Libby Trickett, Olympic gold medallist and mental health advocate will be the keynote speaker at the Brisbane North Chamber of Commerce’s International Women’s Day Long Lunch, co-hosted with the Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Scheduled for 21 February at Tattersall’s Club Grand Ballroom, the event will bring together business leaders to celebrate women’s achievements and discuss ways to advance gender equality. This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action”, underscores the need for progress in business and beyond.

From Olympic Glory to Mental Health Advocacy

Libby Trickett is one of Australia’s most celebrated swimmers, having won Olympic gold in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. However, beneath the success, she battled crippling anxiety and depression. Her situation intensified when she retired from competitive swimming.

Her first retirement in 2009 left her feeling lost without the routine and purpose that elite sport provided. She returned to competition, qualified for the London 2012 Olympics, and secured another gold medal. However, a persistent wrist injury ended her career, forcing her to retire permanently in 2013 at just 27.

The abrupt transition triggered her first serious episode of depression.

Trickett said that stepping away from 35-hour training weeks disrupted the release of happy hormones, which took a toll on her mental health. However, the biggest challenge she faced was adjusting to life without the strict structure of elite sport.

Libby Trickett Battled Post-Natal Depression

Motherhood brought immense joy, but it also introduced new mental health challenges. After the birth of her daughter Poppy, Trickett experienced severe post-natal depression, made worse by relentless sleep deprivation.

“I was incredibly self-critical. I kept thinking, ‘Every woman around the world does this, and they’re coping—so why am I struggling?’” she said.

Seeking professional help and leaning on her support network helped Trickett overcome those struggles. Now, she speaks openly about mental health, encouraging others to seek help and break the stigma.

Championing Women in Business

Trickett has used her personal experiences to build a platform for mental health advocacy. Through her initiatives, Play On and The Sport Social, she promotes wellbeing, resilience, and personal growth, sharing her story to inspire others.

Renee Bailey, Events Officer at Brisbane North Chamber of Commerce, said Trickett’s journey makes her the perfect speaker for this year’s event.

She highlighted Trickett’s transition from athlete to mental health advocate and business leader showcases resilience and innovation in the business community.

Uniting the Business Community

The Brisbane North Chamber and Valley Chamber of Commerce have come together to host this event, reinforcing their commitment to supporting women in business.

Sponsored by Ambient iT, the event will also support The Carers Foundation, which provides crucial assistance to unpaid carers across Australia.

Be Part of the Conversation

Tickets for the International Women’s Day Long Lunch are available now. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Libby Trickett, whose inspiring journey from Olympic gold to mental health advocacy offers valuable lessons in resilience, leadership, and personal growth.
