In a proactive move to enhance road safety during severe weather events, Brisbane has implemented Automated Flooded Road Warning Systems (AFRWS) across various flood-prone locations.

These systems aim to reduce the risk of motorists inadvertently driving into hazardous floodwaters during heavy rainfall, a commitment highlighted by the recent challenges posed by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
AFRWS Installations in North Brisbane
Several northern Brisbane suburbs, including Aspley, Zillmere, Bald Hills, Boondall, and McDowall, have been identified as beneficiaries of the AFRWS installations. Specific locations equipped with these automated warning systems are:
- Zillmere: Bilsen Road, Groth Road, and Newman Road roundabout (all near Zillman Waterholes).
- Bald Hills: Wyampa Road (Deep Water Bend).
- Boondall: Zillmere Road (Zillman Waterholes).
- McDowall: Trouts Road (Downfall Creek).
How AFRWS Operate
The AFRWS utilise highly visible LED road signs that automatically activate when water levels surpass a predetermined safety threshold. Upon activation, these signs display messages such as “ROAD CLOSED AHEAD” or “ROAD CLOSED – NO ENTRY,” effectively alerting motorists to potential dangers ahead.
Strategically positioned on road approaches, the signs ensure maximum visibility both day and night. Additionally, certain locations are equipped with cameras, enabling remote monitoring of flood conditions. Notably, the systems are solar-powered and locally sourced, ensuring functionality even in semi-rural areas where mains power might be unavailable and enhancing reliability during extreme weather events that could disrupt traditional power sources.
Impact of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred
The recent onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025 underscored the critical importance of such warning systems. The cyclone unleashed torrential rains and severe winds across Queensland, leading to widespread flooding, power outages, and significant disruptions. In Brisbane, numerous suburbs experienced rapid flooding, submerging vehicles and overwhelming infrastructure. The AFRWS played a pivotal role during this period, providing real-time alerts to motorists and preventing potential tragedies on the roads.

Future Plans
Building on this success, Brisbane plans to evaluate additional locations for AFRWS installations, further bolstering motorist safety during future weather events.
The AFRWS initiative exemplifies Brisbane’s commitment to leveraging technology for public safety. As climate patterns evolve and extreme weather events become more frequent, such proactive measures are essential in safeguarding communities and ensuring the resilience of urban infrastructure.
