Trailer Wheel Theft Spike Hits Sandgate Area

Sandgate residents are being urged to increase security measures following a series of trailer wheel theft incidents across the suburb and surrounding areas.

Queensland Police are investigating multiple incidents that occurred over a two-day period in late February, with thieves targeting trailers in both residential streets and commercial areas.

The theft spree began on Friday, February 21, when two wheels and tyres were stolen from a trailer parked on Yundah Street in Shorncliffe. That same evening, another trailer on nearby Palm Avenue lost one wheel and tyre to thieves.

The following day, Saturday, February 22, police recorded an attempted theft on Rainbow Street in Sandgate. In a more significant incident, four wheels and tyres were stolen from a secured trailer in the Bunnings Carseldine car park during the early morning hours.

Police are encouraging trailer owners to invest in security devices such as wheel clamps, wheel boots, wheel braces for dual tyres, or wheel chock locks that prevent rolling on inclines while providing security.

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to these incidents to contact Policelink on 131 444 and quote the corresponding reference numbers: QP2500322079, QP2500322090, QP2500321286, or QP2500323449.

Sandgate Magistrates Court to Deal with Domestic Violence Offenders from Operation Whiskey Legion

Sandgate Magistrates Court is set to hear multiple cases linked to Operation Whiskey Legion, a large-scale police crackdown on domestic and family violence (DFV) in North Brisbane.

The operation, which ran from February 12 to 18, saw 337 people charged with 677 offences, including DFV-related crimes, weapons offences, and driving violations.

Among the cases before the court is that of a 33-year-old man, who was arrested on February 17 for allegedly choking and physically assaulting a 34-year-old woman at a residence in Brisbane’s north. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Sandgate Magistrates Court on February 24 to face charges of choking in a domestic relationship and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court will also process several other DFV-related cases stemming from the operation, which aimed to support victim-survivors and prevent further offences. Police engaged with offenders held in watch houses, ensuring they understood the impact of their actions and connecting them with intervention programs.

Operation Whiskey Legion saw heightened police presence in high-foot-traffic areas such as shopping centres, where officers conducted community engagement to raise awareness about DFV support services. The operation also included wanding operations at public transport hubs, leading to the detection of weapons offences.

NBD Chief Superintendent David Cuskelly reaffirmed the police commitment to tackling DFV, stating, “We will not relent in our efforts to empower our community to recognise the signs of DFV, intervene safety and support victim-survivors effectively.”

A local conservation group, the North Brisbane Catchments, has lodged a notice of appeal in the Planning & Environment Court, challenging the decision to subdivide a critical wildlife corridor into 14 lots.

The group stated in their appeal that the approval contradicts the community-developed Bridgeman Downs Neighbourhood Plan, which was established and published well before the Development Application was submitted.

The site at 440 Beckett Road, near Dawn Road Reserve, is currently home to a variety of native wildlife, including koalas, birds, and platypus colonies. Environmental advocates argue that the land serves as an essential link in the Mountains to Mangroves corridor and should remain undeveloped.

Wildlife Queensland suggested that wildlife corridors should be at least 50 metres wide to effectively support local species, but the approved plan includes only a 20-metre-wide corridor. Some conservationists worry that the environmental covenants placed on two of the lots may not be enough to prevent future development.

BCC has stated that environmental factors were carefully considered in the planning process. A town planner’s report highlighted that measures had been taken to protect existing habitats while allowing for development in the growing suburb.

More than 40 formal objections were lodged against the subdivision, with residents and environmental groups expressing concerns over the impact on wildlife and Brisbane’s broader conservation efforts.

Three Men Charged After Firearms and Bayonet Theft in Carseldine

Three men have been charged following the theft of firearms and a military-style bayonet from a Carseldine residence in Brisbane’s north.

The break-in occurred on Tuesday, February 11, at an unoccupied Carseldine property undergoing renovations. According to police, the suspects—who had no connection to the victim—targeted a gun safe on the premises, going to considerable lengths to force it open before stealing the weapons.

Police apprehended the suspects the following day on the Logan Motorway near Carole Park in Ipswich. During the arrest, officers discovered the stolen bayonet in the suspects’ vehicle. Later that evening, investigators located and seized the stolen firearms from a shipping container at a Richlands property.

The three men facing charges include:

A 47-year-old Basin Pocket man charged with entering a dwelling and committing an offence, possessing methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a weapon (military dagger/bayonet), and possession of property suspected to have been acquired for drug-related purposes. He appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday, February 13.
A 34-year-old Gailes man charged with entering a dwelling and committing an offence, and unlawful possession of category B firearms. He remains in custody and is scheduled to reappear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on March 19.
A 47-year-old Ipswich man charged with entering a dwelling and committing an offence, and contravening a domestic violence order. He is expected to reappear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on February 27.

North Brisbane District Inspector Matthew Blunn commended the licensed firearm owner for promptly reporting the theft and praised officers for their quick recovery of the stolen weapons.North Brisbane CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Dan Moore emphasised the importance of firearm security, noting that police regularly conduct firearm security audits for licensed owners. He urged firearm owners to remain vigilant about security measures and to report suspicious activity immediately.

From Olympic Glory to Mental Health Advocacy

Libby Trickett is one of Australia’s most celebrated swimmers, having won Olympic gold in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. However, beneath the success, she battled crippling anxiety and depression. Her situation intensified when she retired from competitive swimming.

Her first retirement in 2009 left her feeling lost without the routine and purpose that elite sport provided. She returned to competition, qualified for the London 2012 Olympics, and secured another gold medal. However, a persistent wrist injury ended her career, forcing her to retire permanently in 2013 at just 27.

The abrupt transition triggered her first serious episode of depression.

Trickett said that stepping away from 35-hour training weeks disrupted the release of happy hormones, which took a toll on her mental health. However, the biggest challenge she faced was adjusting to life without the strict structure of elite sport.

Motherhood brought immense joy, but it also introduced new mental health challenges. After the birth of her daughter Poppy, Trickett experienced severe post-natal depression, made worse by relentless sleep deprivation.

“I was incredibly self-critical. I kept thinking, ‘Every woman around the world does this, and they’re coping—so why am I struggling?’” she said.

Seeking professional help and leaning on her support network helped Trickett overcome those struggles. Now, she speaks openly about mental health, encouraging others to seek help and break the stigma.

Trickett has used her personal experiences to build a platform for mental health advocacy. Through her initiatives, Play On and The Sport Social, she promotes wellbeing, resilience, and personal growth, sharing her story to inspire others.

Police Charge Former Zillmere Basketball Coach in Sexual Assault Case

A former Northside Wizards Basketball coach from Zillmere is at the centre of controversy after being charged with several counts of rape and grooming, raising concerns in the community.

Detectives from the Gateway Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) arrested the 67-year-old Mango Hill resident last week as part of Operation Xray Modern. He has been charged with seven counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of grooming a child under 16.

According to police, the man allegedly took advantage of his role as a basketball coach to groom a child before they turned 16, committing offences against them between 2013 and 2017. After being refused police bail, he appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on January 31.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Lunney has called for anyone with further details to step forward.

“There may be someone out there with more information that could assist this investigation, and we encourage you to come forward,” Detective Senior Sergeant Lunney said.

“If you have experience sexual violence, it is not your fault and you are not alone, there are multiple reporting and support options available to you.”

Northside Wizards Basketball CEO Mark Wrobel released a statement acknowledging the legal proceedings involving a former club employee.

Mr Wrobel stated that the club was informed about the legal case involving a former staff member on 30 January 2025. He mentioned that the individual had been employed by the club from 2013 to 2024 and had coached several teams during that period.
