The site layout features the two buildings positioned to optimize space and usability. To enable this redevelopment, several existing structures will be removed. This includes the demolition of eight existing rooms, the central row of six units, and the north-south circulation pathway that runs through the site. The existing swimming pool will also be replaced to accommodate the updated recreational facilities.

Designed by Sheltaco, the proposal incorporates 76 on-site car parking spaces, ensuring sufficient parking for guests and staff alike. Waste management will be handled with on-site refuse collection, ensuring convenience and maintaining the site’s cleanliness.

A Play Set to Serve Laughs and Surprises

The property caters specifically to single occupants, providing a distinctive alternative to traditional shared living arrangements.

The owners of the Sandgate Road site acquired the 674sqm block in 2022 for $696,000, subsequently demolishing the existing dwelling to construct the current building. It now houses five self-contained one-bedroom apartments and a generously sized communal kitchen and laundry area. Each studio is available for rent between $480 and $520 per week, which includes utilities like power, water, and internet access.

The property manager from Hugo Alexander Property described the establishment as a remarkable share house in Queensland. The interior and exterior design draws inspiration from 1960s Palm Springs modernism, evoking the feel of a classic retro film. One of the units even boasts a private, remote-controlled garage with direct room access, styled after the iconic James Bond aesthetic.

Each of the five studios pays homage to prominent sixties figures, including Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Elvis Presley. The “Presley Room” even features a private courtyard and outdoor area. The shared kitchen showcases a prominent feature wall covered in 1960s psychedelic wallpaper imported from Sweden. The property’s desert-inspired landscaping and bright orange front door enhance the lively atmosphere.

Each air-conditioned studio comes fully furnished with retro-inspired furniture, such as arc lamps and colourful chaise lounges, alongside modern conveniences like a kitchenette with appliances, an ensuite bathroom, two large smart TVs, and an espresso machine. The property listing clearly states that the studios are exclusively for single individuals, following local council regulations.

The property manager noted increased demand for this type of accommodation among young professionals, fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workers, and individuals relocating to the area. This arrangement offers the benefit of a private, fully equipped studio while providing access to a shared kitchen with a full oven, four-burner stovetop, additional freezer space, and laundry amenities.

This co-living style is increasingly seen as one possible solution to Australia’s current housing availability issues. The Queensland government recently introduced legislation allowing first-home buyers to rent a room in their property without affecting stamp duty concessions.

The man contributed an astounding $150,000 to the Gold Coast-based charity Serving Our People, which used the funds to clear lay-by balances for families across the country.

At the Aspley Hypermarket store alone, more than $10,000 worth of lay-by balances were wiped out, spreading joy to countless families preparing for Christmas. Yas Matbouly, Founder of Serving Our People, shared the impact of this incredible gesture:

“It is so beautiful to see donors undertaking these initiatives during Christmas, especially in times like these. There are people currently struggling to choose between feeding their families or buying toys for their children. This will really relieve their worries.”

The donation cleared 744 lay-by accounts nationwide, averaging $200 per account. Some families were moved to tears, while others were in disbelief—one customer even hung up on the call, thinking it was a scam.

The businessman’s identity remains a closely guarded secret, as he wishes to keep the focus on the act of giving rather than on himself. The operations manager of Mr Toys ToyWorld emphasized how the gesture brought happiness and relief to struggling families, saying it’s been a privilege to see such an outpouring of gratitude from customers.

This isn’t the first time the mystery donor has brought smiles to those in need. According to Serving Our People, he has been a longtime supporter of the charity, known for quietly stepping in to help when it’s needed most.

Perth wake-up call

The Bullets’ recent trip to RAC Arena served as a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the NBL. Just two weeks after their commanding home victory over Perth, where James Batemon exploded for 51 points, a depleted Brisbane squad faced a stark reality on the road.

Missing five key rotation players—Tyrell Harrison (illness), Jarred Bairstow (ankle), Tohi Smith-Milner (concussion), Josh Bannan (ankle), and Deng Adel (broken hand)—the Bullets struggled to contain the Wildcats, who shot an impressive 55% from the field.

Despite the challenging circumstances, several Bullets players showed encouraging signs. Casey Prather shone against his former team, delivering 31 points on highly efficient 11/15 shooting.

Additionally, 18-year-old Next Star Rocco Zikarsky made the most of his first starting opportunity, recording 13 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks in a performance that showcased his immense potential.

Head coach Justin Schueller was optimistic about his team’s younger players stepping up. “I’m proud of our young guys who came in and just gave us something as in their effort and energy,” Schueller said, highlighting the contributions of Josh Kunen, Kye Savage, and Tristan Devers.

Bullets vs 36ers

Friday’s home clash against the sixth-placed 36ers (6–6) looms as a must-win encounter, with both teams vying for a coveted play-in spot. The challenge intensifies on Saturday when the Bullets travel to John Cain Arena to face league-leaders Melbourne United (11–4), who previously dominated Brisbane 120–103 in Round 8.
