Brisbane Bullets Back to Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Aim for New Heights with Major Move

In a bid to accommodate their growing fan base and elevate the game-day experience, the Brisbane Bullets are returning to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Boondall for the upcoming NBL25 season.

After regularly selling out the smaller Nissan Arena last season, the move to the 10,500-seat BEC marks a significant step forward for the franchise, according to Bullets CEO Malcolm Watts.

He says the decision enables the club to cater to the booming popularity of basketball in South East Queensland and enhance all aspects of the game presentation.

With the shift to the larger venue, the Bullets are aiming to deliver an NBA-style product, complete with enhanced infrastructure and amenities for fans. Watts emphasises the club’s commitment to revamping the Entertainment Centre to match the experience of other top NBL venues, promising an elevated game presentation and increased seating, premium hospitality, and parking options.

Brisbane Bullets reconnect with history, build for the future

The return to the BEC also holds a sense of nostalgia for the Bullets, who won their most recent NBL championships in 2007 and 1987 at the iconic venue.

Coach Justin Schueller, in his first season at the helm, is thrilled by the prospect of reviving the team’s winning tradition at the arena. He encourages fans to transform the venue into a fortress and support the team’s pursuit of another championship banner.

Beyond the on-court experience, the Bullets are also investing in their long-term future. Construction is underway on a purpose-built High Performance Centre in South Brisbane, which will provide elite training facilities, treatment rooms, offices, and a merchandise store, all under one roof.

According to Watts, having a dedicated home base will be a game-changer for the club, providing a significant platform for on-court and off-court success.

The centre’s central location is expected to boost the club’s brand presence and exposure, while also strengthening its ties to the local basketball community through development programs and potential junior academies.

After a disappointing 2022–23 campaign, the Bullets showed signs of life last season, finishing 13-15 and narrowly missing the playoffs via tiebreaker. With Schueller—regarded as one of Aussie hoops’ most promising young minds—as head coach and the additions of a dedicated training facility and a larger home venue, the franchise is well-positioned to continue its rebuilding process and reclaim its place among the NBL’s elite.

Is the ‘Flipper Zero’ a Security Threat? Queensland Officials Sound Alarm

Queensland authorities are cautioning residents about the potential risks posed by the “Flipper Zero,” a multi-functional device capable of interacting with access control systems.

Police have seized one of these devices in Boondall. Whilst currently legal in Australia and easily purchased online, concerns have been raised about its potential for misuse by some. Amazon has already removed the device from sale, citing its ‘card skimming’ capabilities.

Queensland Superintendent Robert Fleischerurged community members to keep keys, cards, and electronic devices secured, as the gadget needs close proximity to scan codes.

According to Superintendent Fleischer, the Flipper Zero has an appearance resembling a child’s handheld gaming device, yet it possesses the ability to take the place of certain controllers and interface with phones, computers, and even garage door systems.

What is Flipper Zero?

The Flipper Zero is a device that can remotely control various functions such as media players, computer keyboards, mouse cursors, and presentation slides. Specifically, it can serve as a presentation remote control.

The Flipper Zero was initially unveiled in August 2020 through a Kickstarter crowdfunding drive that amassed $4.8 million in backing. Following the successful campaign, the first units of the device rolled out to supporters around 18 months later.

It has the capability to replace certain HID (human interface device) controllers. This enables it to interact with phones and computers.

Additionally, it can function as a keyboard for a computer, controlling media playback on the computer or operating as a camera remote for a phone. The Flipper Zero can also substitute as a computer mouse. Notably, it can even control the TikTok app on a phone.

Flipper’s Response to Issues

In February 2024, the Canadian government revealed intentions to prohibit the sale of the Flipper Zero device within the country, citing concerns over its alleged role in vehicle theft.

In their blog, Flipper noted that “Flipper Zero operates at the same frequencies as remote controls.” They said, “Yes, Flipper Zero can indeed receive and decode radio signals. However, intercepting the radio signal from the remote control won’t be enough to unlock a modern car because they use encryption to securely provide access.”

Whilst acknowledging the device’s ability to intercept radio frequencies used by remote controls, the makers clarified that simply receiving those signals would be insufficient to gain entry to modern encrypted vehicle systems designed with secure access in mind.

Matchbox Twenty Set to Rock Brisbane Again After 12 Years

Matchbox Twenty is coming back to Brisbane later this month bearing new gifts – their first album in over a decade.

Read: Magician Extraordinaire from Bridgeman Downs Headlines Theatre of Magic in New Home

The band’s highly-anticipated fifth studio album “Where The Light Goes” dropped last May, giving fans 11 years worth of pent-up Matchbox melodies and lead singer Rob Thomas’ signature vocals.

To celebrate the new album, Matchbox Twenty is embarking on a 10-date sold-out Australian tour in 2024. Brisbane is a lucky stop, with the band returning to rock out the Brisbane Entertainment Centre 12 years after their last visit.

Back in 2012, the band performed in Brisbane as part of their massive North Tour. The American pop rock band visited the city on October 27 and 28 during the tour’s fifth leg, which spanned four continents over 60 shows and raked in $4.9 million from just 40 of those performances. Matchbox Twenty’s 2012 North Tour marked a triumphant journey across Australia, the Americas, Europe and Asia over the course of a year.

Now, more than a decade later, the band is eager to return to the familiar Brisbane Entertainment Centre stage and reconnect with fans.

Fans can expect to hear fresh tracks off “Where The Light Goes” mixed in with classics like “3AM” and “Back 2 Good.”

The setlist will also include “Bent,” the breakout first single from Matchbox Twenty’s multi-platinum album Mad Season. This powerful rock ballad became Matchbox Twenty’s biggest hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In an interview, Thomas noted that “Bent” was his first intentional love song, centering on two flawed individuals who can’t fix each other’s problems but find a way to make the relationship work. Though their issues remain challenging, they get through it together.

Thomas teased that the new album captures the band’s upbeat, optimistic sound, avoiding any cynical or depressive tunes, given that they had just come out of a period of uncertainty over the last three years prior.

Joining them are special guests Goo Goo Dolls, who kicked off the shows with Matchbox Twenty earlier this month in Perth.

If the Perth show is any indication, Brisbane is in for an incredible night of rocking new tunes and matchbox classics. Thomas expressed his excitement to see fans’ faces again, saying it had been too long since their last Australian tour.

With a veteran band back in town and a venue full of eager fans ready to sing along, Matchbox Twenty’s 2024 Brisbane show is poised for a triumphant return.
