Smoother, Safer Travel for Everyone

One of the most noticeable changes is the removal of the old roundabout, replaced by brand-new traffic signals. These upgrades have streamlined traffic movement, reducing congestion and making pedestrian crossings safer with signalised crossings.

Key sections of Beams Road between Cowie Road and Balcara Avenue have also been widened and separated by a median island. This allows for better traffic management and accommodates the new traffic signals, ensuring a smoother driving experience.

For pedestrians and cyclists, a new shared path along Beams Road now offers a dedicated and safe route for active travel. The project has also modernised power and communication services, supporting future growth and strengthening the area’s infrastructure.

The Impact So Far

The first stage of the upgrade has already delivered significant improvements, including:

9,000 tonnes of new road asphalt laid for a smoother commute
Over 1.2km of new shared path constructed
235 new trees and ground cover planted to enhance the local environment
More than 5 km of underground services upgraded for power, water, and communications

With Stage 1 completed, planning for the next phase of the Beams Road Upgrade is well underway. The next stage, which focuses on the section between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road, was released for tender in early 2025, with construction expected to begin in mid-2025.

Upcoming works will include:

Widening the roadway from Carselgrove Avenue to Handford Road
Constructing a new shared path for pedestrians and cyclists along this section
Building a new pedestrian underpass at Cabbage Tree Creek to improve accessibility and safety

Additionally, Brisbane is continuing to collaborate with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to support the delivery of the rail level crossing removal project.

First Stage of Beams Road Upgrade Delivers New Signalised Intersection and Shared Paths

The first stage of the Beams Road Upgrade in Carseldine is now complete, transforming one of Brisbane’s busiest northside corridors with significant improvements to traffic flow and safety.

Stretching 1.3 kilometres between Lacey Road and Balcara Avenue, the upgraded road now features a safer, signalised intersection at Dorville Road, replacing the previous roundabout. The changes are designed to benefit the 20,000 motorists who use this route daily while also enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Key upgrades for the Beams Road Upgrade project include widening the road from two lanes to four lanes at critical sections, installing pedestrian-activated crossings, and constructing a new shared path along Beams Road for pedestrians and cyclists. The project also added 235 native trees and grasses along the corridor, improving the area’s aesthetics and sustainability.

In addition to these visible changes, the project involved 10 major utility upgrades to support future growth in Carseldine, Fitzgibbon, Taigum, and Zillmere. A “super weekend” of round-the-clock works and over 10 traffic switches ensured the project remained on schedule.

The improvements also address safety concerns along a stretch of road that recorded 75 crashes between 2015 and 2023. With 42 of these accidents occurring at intersections, the upgraded features are expected to significantly reduce incidents.

Looking ahead, the next stage of the Beams Road project, between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road, is set to begin this year. Planned upgrades include further road widening, additional shared paths, and a pedestrian underpass at Cabbage Tree Creek.

Beams Road Upgrade in Carseldine Prioritised in SEQ Level Crossing Program 2024

Residents and motorists in Carseldine will soon experience significant changes as the Beams Road upgrade takes centre stage as part of an initiative to address problematic level crossings in South East Queensland, aimed at improving safety and easing congestion across the region’s transport network.

This project is one of 14 priority level crossings identified for improvement or removal under the new South East Queensland (SEQ) Level Crossing Program 2024.

Traffic Changes and Construction Details

From early August until late 2024, traffic conditions will change along Beams Road between Cowie Road and Dorville Road in Carseldine. The works will focus on upgrading the road pavement on the southern side of this stretch, with several key construction activities planned.

Key aspects of the construction include:

– Upgrading underground infrastructure and services
– Kerb demolition and road profiling works
– Installing new kerb and channel
– Asphalting and line marking

Night works will be conducted for crucial sections, and updates will be provided as the project progresses. All works are subject to weather and site conditions, and notifications will be issued if dates change.

Impact on Local Residents

Local access will be intermittently affected for residents facing Beams Road and Tullamore Street. Traffic controllers will be on-site during the day to assist with property access, ensuring minimal disruption to daily routines.

A significant change for Tullamore Street residents is the permanent shift to left-in and left-out only access, as part of the project’s design. This alteration aims to improve traffic flow and safety in the area.

SEQ Level Crossing Program 2024 Overview

The Beams Road upgrade is a cornerstone project within the SEQ Level Crossing Program 2024. This coordinated approach aims to find cost-effective solutions to some of South East Queensland’s most problematic level crossings, with a focus on reducing congestion and enhancing the performance, safety, and reliability of the transport network.

The program has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) and the Queensland Trucking Association, highlighting its significance for multiple sectors of the community.

Work Starts on Long-Awaited Beams Road Upgrade Project in Carseldine

After years of planning and preparation, construction has now commenced to upgrade the stretch of Beams Road between Lacey Road and Balacara Avenue in Carseldine.

Following early works undertaken in 2023, Doval Constructions has signed a contract with Brisbane City Council for the main construction phase which commenced in September 2023. The company was awarded the contract to deliver the Lacey Road to Balcara Avenue upgrade project.

Major construction works on the Beams Road upgrade will include upgrading the Dorville Road intersection with traffic signals, widening the road between Cowie Road and Balcara Avenue, building a new shared pedestrian and cycle path from Lacey Road to Balcara Avenue, and upgrading power and telecommunications services along the length of the project.

Federal funding for the Beams Rd upgrade was confirmed in August of this year.

About the Project

As a vital connection between various communities and a key commuter route to major roads like Gympie Road, Beams Rd currently handles around 19,000 vehicles per day. With major population growth expected in surrounding suburbs such as Carseldine, Fitzgibbon, Taigum and Zillmere, traffic levels are forecast to rise even further.

The Beams Road upgrade project between Lacey Rd and Handford Road aims to reduce congestion issues both currently and into the future as the area develops.

Jointly funded by the Australian Government committing $50 million as well as Brisbane City Council through the Better Roads for Brisbane Program, the upgrade works will help ensure Beams Rd can continue serving the transport needs of the region.
