This proactive engagement is designed to foster a space where children are encouraged to explore, learn, and think critically.

An essential element of Mahmuda’s success is her collaboration with parents to tailor educational goals and track progress through the innovative use of Storypark, an online community platform. This tool allows families to engage with the weekly program and contribute to their children’s learning narratives, reinforcing the community-centric model of Mahmuda’s day care service.

Award Recognition

In its thirteenth year, the Excellence in Family Day Care Awards continues to celebrate family day care educators’ important role in early childhood education across Australia.  This prestigious award spotlights the significant contributions of family day care services, chosen by 52,700 families nationally as their preferred early childhood education method.

Deagon Market Square Undergoes $4-M Transformation Under New Ownership

Deagon Market Square, once regarded a fading retail hub, is set to undergo a remarkable $4-million transformation that includes new tenants like Cofficition Cafe, Price Busters, a gym, child care centre, and a new sushi restaurant.

Formerly a quiet and neglected spot, Deagon Market Square has now come under the ownership of Ganellen Property, a Sydney-based asset management company known for its commitment to revitalizing commercial spaces.

The acquisition marks another step in Ganellen’s portfolio expansion, following their successful repositioning of the Woolworths-anchored Kallangur Fair Shopping Centre in August 2021.

With a comprehensive vision to create a convenient and dynamic shopping destination, Ganellen Property has partnered with the existing tenants and together, they are investing over $4 million in rejuvenating Deagon Market Square. This concerted effort involves introducing novel stores and reimagining the layout and services offered.

The endeavour aims to revamp the centre, located nine kilometres northeast of Aspley, into a vibrant and diverse community space.

Among the exciting additions to the centre is the trendy Cofficition Cafe, which promises to be a stylish and inviting coffee shop serving as a focal point for shoppers to gather, relax, and socialise.

Additionally, a new sushi restaurant will cater to culinary enthusiasts seeking diverse dining experiences.

Price Busters, the well-known Queensland-based discount variety chain, will occupy the space formerly held by the Reject Shop.

Ganellen Property acquired the shopping centre for $20 million in 2022 and has become an integral part of the company’s strategic vision to foster engaging and thriving community hubs. Anchored by Fresh & Save Food Warehouse on a 15-year lease until 2031, Deagon Market Square also boasts other key tenants such as Guppy’s Early Learning, Rackley Swimming, and Club Lime Gym.

But the overhaul doesn’t stop with these additions. Ganellen Property’s General Manager, Jason Zagni, expressed his excitement about breathing new life into the shopping centre, reiterating the company’s commitment to continuous improvement and community engagement within the Deagon shopping centre.

On its official site, the company laid out its plans for the shopping centre to include a re-mix of its specialty tenants, including introducing key missing food and service tenant uses and improved income through the introduction of new GLA and improved operational management.

New Sandgate Neighbourhood Plan to Be Adopted in 2023

The revised Sandgate Neighbourhood Plan is almost ready, and will be adopted in March 2023. Here are some changes coming to Sandgate and neighbouring suburbs once the amended plan becomes official.

Read: Residents Thumb Down 5-Storey Developments in Sandgate Neighbourhood Plan

The Sandgate Neighbourhood Plan includes the suburbs of Sandgate, Deagon, Shorncliffe and Brighton.

The plan received support from the Queensland Government with no changes required, after a huge majority of the LNP Council voted for the plan in November 2022. There were only seven from Greens, Labor, and independent councillors who voted against the revised plan.

Sandgate

Sandgate, one of the oldest bayside villages in Brisbane, will undergo major changes as part of the new neighbourhood plan, as it would allow a maximum building height of five storeys for the Lagoon Street sub-precinct.

The draft amendment package also seeks to maintain and enhance the Sandgate centre as the primary centre for the area, providing a balance of commercial and residential development close to public transport.

Deagon

Separated from Sandgate from a series of lagoons, Deagon is a residential suburb which has been selected as one of the focus of the neighbourhood plan.

Council has removed plans to rezone the area around Deagon railway station to low-medium residential (units and townhouses) after some residents raised their concerns regarding the plan.

The draft amendment package retains the Low-density residential zoning and Character residential zoning around the Deagon railway station.

Connaught St, located north of Deagon sports grounds will be retained to low impact industry zoning to support local employment and business opportunities in the area.

Shorncliffe

Shorncliffe, which was once part of Sandgate, became a separate suburb in Brisbane in 1975.

Shorncliffe has been identified as one of the study areas having potential growth. The draft proposes character residential zoning in Shorncliffe to better protect traditional building character in the suburb.

The bayside suburb is home to many character homes or those built in 1946 or earlier. Many homes in Shorncliffe even have a history that dates back to the early 1900s.

Brighton

Brighton, an established area of low-density housing, was not included in the neighbourhood planning process. All current planning outcomes for Brighton are retained in the draft amendment package.

The draft Sandgate District Neighbourhood Plan became a subject of discussion in the last three years, after the initial plan suggested up to six storeys for Sandgate’s main street, Brighton Rd.  The draft plan was eventually revised after residents voiced their opposition. No major policy changes have been proposed to the suburb, based on the updated draft.

GIVIT was established in 2019 by Juliette Wright. Their platform allows charities to make potential donors aware of what are the exact items currently needed by the individuals that they support.

Charitable Recycling Australia

Charitable Recycling Australia proudly supports circular economy transition through charitable reuse and recycling. With the help of member enterprises who provide their decades of expertise in the collecting and sale of donated goods, the organisation has been extending the life of about 285 million products each year and pioneering the concept of circularity even before it was officially named.

Treasure Troves

According to the Needs Assessment report prepared by Business Geographics, there are five long daycare centres in the catchment area, offering a total of 402 places, with an average occupancy rate of 84.58 per cent.

Whilst the supply is meeting current demand, the report said that the major catchment could still support an additional 50 to 80 places up to 2026.

“In conclusion, a new purpose-built childcare centre on BraunStreet at Deagon would improve local childcare choice and amenity and support the day to day needs of the immediate residential community. The subject site is approprite for the proposed use and would be expected to represent an attractive alternative in this market.” – Business Geographics
